Does anybody know how to stop the Bonging when you leave the key in the ignition? I've been told about a black wire with a pink stripe that goes from the steering column to the fuse box that can be cut. Does anybody know about this for sure? If so where is the best place to locate this wire so that I can put some ends on it? Thanks in advance. It's driving me insane...
To find the answer to your question, go to the main Superduty area of the forums, and at the top click the stickied FAQ, then click on the truck, then click Interior/Exterior, and see question 3.
It gives a pretty brief explanation for how to get rid of the key dinger. You can also search for "key buzzer" or key dinger, etc... for other ideas of how to disable it.
EDIT - aww heck, here you go:
from the FAQ:
Q: How do I get rid of the key buzzer?
A: Easiest way is to remove the ignition assembly. This is done by looking under the steering column and using an awl or something similar press the detent ball under the ignition. The assy. can only pull out when the key is in the ON position (not started.) You will see some brass contacts. Tape over them and the buzzers will stop.
Also, some models will let you just push the seatbelt latch and that will disable the buzzer until you turn off the truck. Once restarted you must do it again.
In case you haven't disabled it yet, the seatbelt dinger disable instructions are in the FAQ there, also. They should be in the owners manual, as well.
Thanks Again, That bonging for the belts went away before it even got to the driveway the first time. The manual was very helpful but I wanted to wait until my warranty ran out before cutting any wires or ripping anything apart. I've been living with this key in the ignition thing for about 1 year and a half.
I read a thread on here last night about this sound and how to fix it. After taking the ignition key cylinder out, which I found easier to do by taking the bottom cover off under the steering wheel. It was easier to see and push the realease button for me. There is a black wire with a red or pinkish stripe on it attached to a black clip with a contact point on it. I detached this and moved it under the steering wheel out of the way and solved a "bonging" noise that has been a problem for 4 years. Thanks for the info on this problem.

You think that is an easier way? I couldn't believe how easy pulling the cylinder and placing the tape was. I thought I had to have done something wrong. It was TOO easy...
What wire do I cut for the 2005? I cut the black wire with the pink stripe on my '99 and this disabled the chime. I haven't looked, is it the same on the 05s? I don't want to mess with the other stuff. Cutting a wire takes 2 minutes and can be easily fixed. So, which one to cut for the 05?
Thanks

If we killed car thieves, we wouldn't have chimes and buzzers telling us to take our keys out.
Rather than cutting the wire after removing the key cylinder, put a small piece of tape over the contacts. That's as fast as cutting a wire, and doesn't do any permanent damage. To go back to stock, just peel off the tape.
If you prefer to cut the wire, I think it is still the black/pink from reading I've done... you may want to search and read up on it, because this wire may control one or two other things, whereas the tape on contacts will disable only the key chime. I'm not 100% on that, just something I think I recall from past reading.
The seat belt silencer steps in the FAQ aren't working on my '06 I tried it multiple times. The seatbelt light doesn't come on after the second round of plug in - unplug.
I wear my belt all the time, just sometimes I'd like to drive one block without all that ^%#$ racket!
Well, I think I mentioned in my earlier post... but the instructions should also be printed in your owners manual. They may be different on the newer models - so check your manual for the proper procedure.
Are you talking about the key in ignition chime or the seat belt reminder? The seat belt reminder is in the manual. At least it is in mine (2005). Since there was...well, no change from 05 to 06, i would assume it would be in yours as well.
Ah. So it is. Pg 105. It differs from the FAQ, though, in that it calls for 9 consecutive buckle-unbuckles, instead of 2 sets of 3 with headlight activation in the middle. Will have to try the "new" way tomorrow.
