Finally Registered!! Now I have a question!!

After many months of enjoying this site I figured I better register. It is a great help for backyard mechanics like me. My question is concerns a 1983 4.9L f150.
The charging system is only putting out only 11 to 12 volts which drains the battery after a week or so. I suspect the voltage regulator.(The battery and alternator are new-- didn't remedy the problem but both where ancient anyway.)The regulator is the type mounted in the engine area above the passenger wheel well. I know there is a way to check it by measuring the voltage across a combination of the tabs but I forget which combination it is. Any help would be appreciated...Thanks!!

at 11 or 12 volts unless you are drawing a lot of amps this is low. Should be at 13.5 to charge the battery.
