When did Ford begin using computers on the F-150/250/350 ?
Did it basically begin when they started using EFI ?
How long do these computers last ?
How much do these computers cost ? approx, not to install.
Are the benefits that much better than before ?
There is some historical information on http://fordfuelinjection.com . It looks like Ford started using some type of computer control as far back as 1978, mainly for timing and emission controls. I'm not sure exactly when or if Ford used these in the F-series trucks though. The 302 went EFI as an option in '85 trucks. The 300 went EFI in '87 and the 351 and 460 went EFI in '88. I don't know if the trucks used the timing computers or feedback carbs or if EFI was the first time they were computer controlled.
They were computer controlled at least as far back as the TFI days, which was as early as 1983 I believe. The feedback carb setup fed throttle position back to the computer, which used it to control various stuff.
The computers rarely ever go bad. There are many that are still in service from the factory. They are very durable and very well made.
They go basically for whatever you can get them for. Average price is probably somewhere around $50 at a yard.
EFI was a HUGE improvement over carbureated motors, no contest. My two cents, Ford's EFI is one of the best systems ever designed.
