I have a 1989 F-150 Inline 6, 4x4. I got the truck for 500 bucks because they guy thought the fuel pumps where out in the tanks, being as there are 3 fuel pumps all together, we knew it wasn't that, checked the fuel relay. Sure enough it was out, 25 bucks later it runs wonderfully.
The problem I am having is when I take it to the pump it won't fill. Like when I sqeeze the pump trigger, it pops back, so I slowly filled it thinking it was being slow, then it just came out the side. Doing that I thought it was not venting, so I watched it to bubble and go down, it just sat at the top of the line, not moving an inch I waited 5 minutes, nothing. So I thought maybe it was just the line had something in it, I took off the inlet from the side of the truck and it was clear. Put it back in, thought maybe the tank is just full and the gauge is off. But it doesn't sound it. A friend down the street has a newer one, and it sometimes does the same, he said he'll put 5 bucks in and that's all it'll take and then on down the road it'll take the rest.
So thinking maybe the line it kinked I took it back off. You know how the inlet and the vent are kinda in the same. Inlet being a smaller tube and the vent just being larger and over the top of it...Anyways.. So I cut about an inch off of it. But still does the same thing. What should I do??? Should I just cut it all off??? Please help..
sounds like you have a hellacious kink....the fuel inlet goes into a 1" hose that is inside the 2-something inch hose. fuel goes down the 1, air comes up the 2+ into the vents.
Yeah I know. I was wondering if just cutting the 1" hose off more would just solve it. Since it all just goes in the 3" hole. But leaving enough so that it can still breath.
Just incase someone has been having this issue also. You might want to check the sending unit. I desided to drop the tank the other day, and I do suggest you use a ATV jack if you have one, makes it a whole lot easier. But I dropped the tank, and sure enough it was full to the top, that's why it wouldn't take gas. I checked the sending unit. The float on it for the level sender had a hair line crack in, and let gas seep into the float, causing it not to float.
$4.75 later and new float from LMC Trucks and it works wonderfully.
