I know this is a little non-mustang related but I know you guys have the knowledge and expertise to help me.
I'm trying to help my neighbor get his '78 F250 started. It's a 460ci engine with 4bbl motorcraft carburetor.
So far we've replaced the spark plugs and wires. Confirmed the firing order 1,5,4,2,6,3,7,8 And a rebuilt motorcraft carburetor.
When we try to start it, the engine just spits and spins. Also, a lot of fuel is splashing out of the carb and everything. He isn't even pressing the gas pedal while starting.
Is there anything you guys can think of that we could check?!?! The battery is now charging because it died while trying to start it.
Stang,
Remove the carburator and hold it upside down until it is fully drained. Reinstall it and see what you get. If it still is flooding then rebuild or replace it.

P.S. By holding it upside down and draining it you can sometimes remove solids through the vent and solve your problem. If you've got a bad float or needle seat this won't help.
might be the carb float jamming, let it sit, then wack it a couple times with a rubber malot ( on the float bowls of coarse ) i have seeen that happen alot where the needle gets a little dirt in it an jams open. ( happened to me with my i6)
In my opinion the main problem you have is the carb. for starts the Motorcraft carb is the biggest piece of crap carb EVER made, but that besides the point. The one gentleman was correct in first trying tapping on the front of the carb with a wrench or small hammer to try to dislodge the sticking float.then take a plug out to make sure they are not gas fouled.if they are, then you need to clean them or dry em out.be CAREFULL not to crank the motor too long if it persist in flooding. If you fill the cylinders full of raw gas,you can wash the rings and cyls. of oil. Then its time for a OVERHAUL. If the carb float is still sticking take it to a mechanic to check it out.If the carbs bad, take it back and get a holley or edelbrock 600-750 c.f.m. you wont be displeased!
