As alot of you probably don't know, I am a senior in high school. Well, the other day we started looking up topics for our Term Paper.
The topic this year is "Taking a stand in History."
Does anybody have a good idea for a topic? I'd like it to be somewhat original, but I need to be able to get a substantial amount of information on it.
If anybody has an idea, it'd be greatly appreciated!
The most obivious one that comes to mind concerns "The War on Terror" and whether or not not you think it has made our country a safer place to live. However remember for a paper to be judged effective it should be based on analysed facts and not opinions based on media spin.
Myself being a WWII buff I would suggest the battle for Midway Island. It was the turning point in the war with Japan. The Japanese were never the aggressor after that. Or you could do one on President Wilson. He is the only man ever to have to make the decision to use nuclear weapons at any time in history. Or if you really want to get to the unusual, look up the town of Meggido. In ancient times it was a mountain pass outpost that basically controlled the trade traffic between the Egyptian and Persian empires. There have been more wars fought over this valley and outpost than any other real estate in the world. You will find the name of the valley familiar- very familiar. Or you could do a research paper on John Browning. He has more patents on rifles, automatic weapons, pistols than most. Or you could do one on the Knights Templar. It will amaze you who all has been a Knight. Just to name a few.
I second the henry ford assembly line idea. The assembly line revolutionized the industry and has also carried over into other areas to make mass producing an ease. You could also go into how he made employee housing so the employees would be less likely to demand more (wages, benefits). He also had the highest paid employees which made them happy. I believe that he didnt allow unions either. Another easy one would be the depression/WWII. Write on how the depression effected the economy/lifes of americans. Also on the plans FDR had to get us out, then go into how WWII saved us from total disaster. I would think that it would relate to the topic, after all that was when women started working mens jobs, the gigantic jump in production of war materials and other changes in US history. Prohibition was also a major deal, rise in crime/gangs and the such. Just some ideas, they may not relate but may get you thinking. Im a freshman in college, I know all about writing papers on something stupid/hard/confusing. Just got done in Amer Hist on the depression/FDR era and going into WWII. FINALLY we're getting into the interesting eras!

Say what!? President Wilson???? President Woodrow Wilson?????
Hmmmmmmmm. I thought that Franklin Delano Roosevelt made the decision to make 'The Bomb' and Harry S. Truman made the decision to use it, in 1945. (And a historical note - Truman was kept in the dark about 'The Bomb' until he took the Oath of Office after FDR's death.)
And, the bombs were dropped on August 6th and August 9th, 1945.

Henry Ford really did not need unions, he understood that if you have happy well paid worker that can afford your products that your company will make money. He also did not just give them health insurance, he built them a hospital. Henry Ford had a great vision, have everything in one place to build a car.
What our country needs now is more Leaders like Henry and less of the CEO/SOBs we have now. Henry knew that if he took care of the workers and payed them decent wages he had a productive company.
Your best bet is to write it about something you are familiar with.
If you pull the classic "PICK TWENTY IDEAS AND RESEARCH THEM" you're going to come up short in places. Choose something you know, and are familiar with, and then break it down into subject areas!
For example:
How has the sudden increase in the price of fuel directly affected you, your classmates, and your parents? What are the concievable long term effects?
I would go after that tooth and nail!!!
It would be a term paper with a lot of "guts" to it...
PSONEDIT: As I think on it, the ideal paper would and should call all facets of your studies into play in the presentation of it.
Math
Science
Social Studies
Economics
Physical Education
Career Studies
Literacy (There is quite a movement towards home offices, and online careers. The online communities on the web forward this as well)
Languages (see above)
Think: How can you interpolate what is going on today in terms of your scholastic endeavors? Knowing what you have been taught thus far, what comments or ideas present themselves?

Henry Ford sounds kind of interesting. How exactly would he be applied to Taking a stand in history? Perhaps somehow that he was the first to make a point to make an assembly line, and how the assembly line is a major part of our economy today??
