I found a transmission in a 1985 F150 with an inline six. It is a four speed with overdrive and it has a seperate bell housing for the clutch. Is there any particular way to ID the trans? How do you tell the New Process from the SROD if it is one of the two?
If the linkage is integral to the case, you have a SROD, Single Rail Over Drive.
If side mounted, SMOD, Side Mounted OD. These also go by several other names based on the RUG cast into them, or the number given them by Tremec. (Tremec 170, I think)
These use the same design as an old Top loader car trans. They were built by Tremec for Ford. Not as strong as a top loader. 2nd to 3rd is too much of a jump, making for tough sledding if you are in hills or curves between 30 to 50 mph.
A NP box will have a top mounted shifter and be low first with direct 4th.
