My '76 F-150 with P/S has a major leak, to the tune of a pint a day. I've changed the pump, lines and all, so it looks like it is coming from the sector, somewhere near the bottom.
Any ideas on the most likely cause, and can I fix it myself without lots of special tools?
Thanks for any advice!
The seal in the box is bad. You can replace it yourself with a seal kit. I recommend using the factory shop manual. There is a special wrench to use with a torque wrench for adjusting the worm bearing race nut. I tried to find this tool #T66P-3553-B. Even Ford couldn't help, so I made my own. The seal kit will probably come with a bunch of odd parts that you don't have in your box, just discard them.
Thanks for the information! I've never done this before, and I don't want to mess it up. Can I replace the seal with it in the truck? Do I remove the pitman arm, and then a cover?
Thanks a lot for any additional help, I really want to do this right.
I had the same thing a year ago. Mine was actually getting tough to turn too.
I bought the kit to rebuild it. But then noticed I could buy a refurb at Kragens for much less than I thought and alot less labor. Bought it put it in, works great.
I still have the kit somewhere if your interested.

I don't see any way of changing the seals without taking the steering box out. There is also a seal at the input shaft. That one leaked on my truck. If you take the box apart, you can look for wear on the gear teeth. If you see obvious wear, get a rebuilt unit. Mine was in pretty good shape considering the miles on it.
