Drain Converter?? - E4OD

I have had the tranny pan dropped, cleaned, new gasket and new fluid.
This has happen three times in the last 6 months. (Regukar fluid change then a leaking gasket)

Anyway....I have read about having to drain the converter seperate?? Is that a good idea as Mr. Transmission and AAMACO didn't do that.

Does the new fluid not get into the converter? Or is this just to make sure ALL the old fluid gets replaced?

Thank you.

The TC holds almost half of your total fluid. If you don't drain it, it will just pollute the clean fluid with the dirty fluid in the TC. Many shops just drop the pan etc and leave the TC alone. The is an "accepted" practice, but to me doesn't make sense.

Some shops will Flush the system with new fluid and that will get pretty much all the fluid changed, but it will cost you a fair chunk o $.

To properly drain the TC at home, look at the bottom of your tranny. Looks like you have an E4OD, assuming your 95 is like my 94, there should be a plastic plug on the bottom of the bell housing. Pull that. Get under the truck with a strong light and have a trusted buddy tap the starter a couple clicks to get the plug in the access "window". Of course you know to disable the ignition right? DOn't want that sucker starting with you laying under there.

Pull the plug, and have a large drain pan handy. If I recall, my big steel drain pan was almost full to the top when I drained the TC. Whew.

On the E4OD it is tricky and a pain to refill the TC the usual way by turning the TC til the drain is about half way up and pumping fluid in. So, Instead, puta bout 1/3 to half the rated amount of fluid in the pan and start it for a few seconds. The TC should start to fill up. Add more fluid, start again etc. As you get to almost the total rated capacity, start checking the dipstick readings and add fluid as needed. YOu should also check and top up during the first week to make sure you got it all.

YOu will probably use a total of around 15qts, so have lots of disposal bottles and lots of replacement fluid handy.

Good Luck,

Big surprise there!I would let Stevie Wonder drive my truck before I would let Aamco look at it.They have no clue, and dont have the proper equipment to do any real diagnostics. All they do is remove and replace.I'll stop now because the thought of that place gets my blood pressure through the roof!

Anyways, what Jim said is absolutely correct-always change it all.Do it yourself if you can,and I recommend that you add a drain plug to the pan when you remove it to make the next change that much easier.Just be sure that you put it hwere it wont interfere with anything inside.

Yeah add a drain plug. Strangely, there appears to be a spot built into the pan for a plug but Ford didn't put one in. I Installed a B&M drain plug right in that spot and it works fine. Makes draining much less messy.

Always have a bag of cat litter handy. It's going to be messy no matter what.
