making a head liner

Has anyone tried to make their own headliner? And if so what did you do and how did it work?
Thanks
David

I made or rather re-did my headliner... My original head liner was cracked in several places. I removed it and bought some black Pleather & a can of spray adhesive. You need to let the Pleather sit for a bit in the sun so it is wrinkle free. Spray the old card board headliner with the adhesive & lay the pleather over it. Then cutt off the excess with a 1 inch boarder all around, Fold that over and glue it down. End result you have a thicker headliner that looks pretty good. If your missing the headliner or its completely broken I suppose you could use what you do have as a pattern and cutt it out of some wood paneling that is about 1/8 inch thick then put the pleather. Should work fine.

Thanks
That is just about what i was planning to do. My liner board is warped pretty bad so i will cut out a new one. What is pleather?
I was going to find some vinyl but if pleather is better i will use that.
Thanks
David

Pleather = Fake Leather

Most any larger fabric store will carry actual headliner material in 5 or 6 basic colors. It's about 1/8 inch thick and 'foamy'. I think it would work better than vinyl or pleather for absorbing ambient noise.

Be sure to use a strong adhesive (and plenty of it!) when you're doing your headliner. I did that once in this Fairmont I use to have. I spend several hours one day, taking the time to do the job as close to stock as I could possibly be. The next morning I looked in the driveway and saw my headliner only being held up by the dome light and the edges. D'OH! I just stuck with bare cardboard after that

I bought some headliner (foam backed material) from a local fabric shop and then used 3M super adhiesive and it worked great. I also spayed some rubberized undercoating on the underside of the roof to help kill some of the noise.

Total cost was about $15.

Hi,
I did exactly what Breathinhappily did, except that I added 1" foam between the headliner and the vinyl, and installed buttons in a diamond pattern. The same place that I bought the vinyl sold button kits. You cut small circles out of the excess vinyl that you trimmed off and then press them onto the buttons. After snapping some intersecting chalk lines to evenly space out the buttons I poked holes all the way through the headliner with an awl and then tied a nylon string through the loop on the back of each button. Once the button was pulled into the face of the headliner the desired amount, I tied off the back around a 6 penny finishing nail. The end result looked like a nice leather rolled and pleated headliner (like those comfy leather couches).

I used auto motive type carpet, like a trunk carpet kinda, just glued it on with the cement glue stuff works like a chram looks really good, and i put a piece of velcro on my stereo remote and it sticks to the roof, it quieted it down alot too.
