I fired up my 6 cylinder after sitting for a couple of weeks, but when I cranked it up,I got a strange sound. Like the powersteering was low on fluid. So I checked and it was low so I added. I got it for a couple of minutes afterwards then it quit. When I turned the wheel the sound was still there plus the PS whine.
I cut it off after a couple of minutes and checked the oil,( I know, should of done this first) and it was a tad low,but not dangerously low. I've ran it this low before with no noise. Do yall think it was the pistons scraping the cylinder walls or what?
Thanks.
Cruise, see if you can pin down where its coming from exactly. It maybe some noisy accesories on the front of the engine. Might be getting time for an oil change, as my truck was making almost a "rattling" type of noise, letting me know it had gotten too thin.
Might just be a sticky lifter after sitting awhile. I've had this happen too. Check all your fluids and everything and take her out for a long moderate cruise...and see if it clears up.
Could you describe the sound a bit more?
If the engine was low on oil, it would make more of a rattling noise rather than a PS whining type noise. Could be something subject to old PS fluid, the fact that the season is getting colder, and that you haven't run the truck in a few weeks.
Is your oil pressure ok? any serious leaks?
I would drive it around for a good 10min after it has fully warmed up and see if the noise is still there.
I second 954x4jay, idler pulley could be going. How many miles are on your pulley?
hope this helps
