The 400ci in my 79 F250 4x4 Wrecker is getting tired. I would like to pull it out and rebuild it. I would like to drop in another motor, so I can still use my truck while I'm rebuilding the 400. My questions is... What other engines can I put in the truck without to much difficulty, or major modifications . What years engines should I look for? As soon as the 400 is rebuilt I plan on putting it back in the truck. The Truck has a 4 Speed tranny with a Dana 44 in front with lock out hubs, and a dana 60 in the rear.
I've offered this suggestion to other's here before. It's what I did. I bought a 72 LTD with a 400/c6. I bought it for $80 and sold the left over hulk to a guy for $20 who hauled it off the salvage. Only problems was it had run hot and cracked the heads. Watch for bad freeze plugs etc. I was able to rebuld it in my on time, gave the tranny to a friend and kept a ton of spare brakets, jacks etc.
