check engine light question

I had a post a few days ago about "bank 1 too lean" diagnostic, my service engine soon light had been on for a long time. But my battery went dead and after I replaced it the engine light went off. My question is how long are the codes/warning remembered and displayed by the computer? For example if the sensor triggered a warning just once, and I never did anything about it, would the light stay on indefinately even if the problem went away? My light had been on for like 3-4 years and now since I replaced the battery its been a week and no light yet. Does that mean I seem to be in the clear now?
