what is the fastest way to remove paint and surface rust, i have alot to do and so far i have been using a drill with a 5" stick on sand paper, is there a faster way?
Just about every way is going to be faster then that. I grind the rust with a grinder and a 24 grit sanding disk then sandblast any pits. You may have to fill in the pits with filler and if there are holes in the metal it should be cut out and replaced. I go over the grinding marks with 80 grit sandpaper on a dual action sander before primer, sanding and repriming. As far as stripping paint off of a vehicle, I like to use 36 grit paper on a 8" orbital and then when most of the paint is stripped off, go over with 80 grit on a dual action sander. Everyone has there favorite ways of doing things, so opinions will vary. A little sanding disk on a drill though, no wonder why you are asking if there is a faster way.
Sandblasting an entire body can be messy, as sand gets everywhere. It runs about 100 psi, but the cfm is what can really get you. The blaster I have sucks the air, and the compressor is always running. If you go that route, get a compressor that won't have a volume problem.
All the good stuff has been said already, but will add a note. When using either method, be cautious about leaving the sanding disc or blaster tip too long on the metal, the heat will warp it.
HI JJ>>>> the quickest way is rent a comercial compressor with hoses, rent a sand blaster also,,with hood and use your respirator...low pressure, under 80psi,,,use something like black beauty silca free blast media.... have everything prepared and taken apart. bring in the blaster and be done two hours latter, with the frame. also done....,,,....,,,not less than 500$ should do it.YOU DID SAY THE FASTEST, didn.t you? This town has companys that will show up and blast it for you, no towing anything, and can do the clean up and containment....If only I could afford it....then ther is the company that will blast with CO2[ dry ice}...no blast media left over/ it evaporates/ only the pile of paint and rust....really big $$$
I eventually want to repaint my 84 F150 4x4, after some extensive bodywork of course. I was wondering about the liquid paint strippers, do they work well? Would any of you recommend I strip my truck by sanding it or could I use the stripper? BTW my truck already has 3 paint jobs on it countint he original, I want to take it all the way down.
Liquid paint stripper can work well. The trick is to brush on a heavy coat, and brush it on in only one direction. Some types of paint is going to be a little harder to remove then others. Some people say if you can cover it with something like saranwrap ect, it helps it work too, but I have never tried it. The paint stripper won't really won't do anything about the rust. It still may take more then one application of stripper to get the job done, as well as a little sanding. The bad thing about paint stripper is if it gets into a seam somewhere and you don't get rid of it all and it all neutralized, it could mean problems after you painted if it seeps from seams. May want to tape up seams to prevent it from getting into them and do those areas by sanding just to be extra safe. And if you won't be painting jambs, underhood ect, you want to prevent it from getting in there too.
