rebuilt steering box
I finally got my rebuilt steering box in my '54! You may remember last winter I wrote for tips about rebuilding the steering box and also about rebuilding the steering wheel. Well..... I finally got the guy at a local truck garage to rebuild an extra steering box I had. I told him it was not hurry and you know the rest of the story... It was finally done but then my Dodge Caravan spent 4 weeks in the garage with a cam sensor and then a crank sensor problem and I needed my truck as a daily driver to get to school (I teach). Then this summer I needed my truck to haul stuff. Then in July my Dad died. Then soccer practice and school school started in August. I wanted him to put in the rebuilt steering box when I had time to rebuild the steerig wheel. I figured that time would not come until winter so I called him to do it as soon as he had time and I could re-do the steering wheel when winter set in and I had time.
I got the truck back yesterday and boy does it drive and steer nice! If you recall I had so much play in the wheel I could move the steering wheel more than 90 degrees before the wheels moved! and it steered real hard with definite spot that cinched when I turned it hard.
It now has very little play, steers easier and is more of a joy to drive. It still takes a lot of arm-strong steering when parking or barely moving since the radials put a lot of tread on the pavement but even that is better than it was before. He did say the king pins ought to be replaced as one is a bit worn and loose. Everything else, drag link, tie rod, tie rod ends is good.
Hoping for a sunny weekend so I can get more driving in!!!

Dick, for those outside PA perhaps we should define Pennsyltuckey. What do you call the area between Philly and Pittsburgh? Pennsyltuckey!!! Perhaps your version includes Erie and Philly.
