Question Engine ID Help Needed Please!!

Greetings All:
Have a 302 Ford Engine that was given to me, excellent shape. Can anyone please help me with further ID of it??

There is a metal tag bolted on engine with the following information:

302 C 72 12
1 H K274 S

Would appreciate it if you could decipher the above. Engine has a 2bbl carb on it now if that helps. Looking to change to a 4bbl manifold and carb in hopes of improving performance. Is this a good spot to start the upgrade??

THANKS in advance, look forward to your replies.

WOW! A 302 that still has the factory ID tag! That's a rarity these days!

OK, here's how it breaks down:

302-displacement/ C-This one doesn't show in my books / 72-model year / 12-Change level

1-Year of engine production (1971) / H-Month of engine production (July) / K274S-Engine code number

That's about as much as I've got from what my books say.

THANKS TigerDan for the help. This engine is as clean as the day it came from the factory, lol

Hopefully the change to a 4bbl carb and manifold will help performance.

Oh, it will. Factory 4-bbl engines had higher compression than 2-bbls, but you can still wake it up a bit. What are you planning to put it in?

Greetings TigerDan:

The engine is installed in a 65 Econoline Pickup. Fits like a bug in a rug, LOL.
