what is a "Trailer Special"?

I just bought a 1981 Ranger F350 XLT "trailer Special". Does anyone know what the "trailer Special" refers to. This designation is part of the emblem on the side of the truck.
Thanks.

Comes factory ready to tow stuff. Like you get dual tanks i think, with a tow package and some had trailer break set ups on them.

And they were usually a longer truck and fancy as well and some were dually.

The older Fords had what they called a "camper special". These had a longer bed(about 8.5 ft) and the camper people made special campers for them. See if your bed is a little longer.

I have also heard and seen a "towing package", but this did not have any emblems on it. These trucks usually had dual front shocks, and a sway bar in the back under the differential.

1981 F-350 Camper Special Package:

60 amp alternator
63 amp hour maintenance battery
oil pressure guage
ammeter guage
bright low-mount recreation swing away mirrors (9"x6")
extra engine cooling
stabilizer bars front and rear
heavy duty shocks front and rear
camper wiring harness (12 volt 7-wire sealed cable with connectors)
external transmission oil cooler with select shift automatic transmission
camper special emblem

I'm quite familiar with both the trailer towing and camper special packages for 80 and 81 and I've never seen or heard of a longer than 8' bed on either. No dual front shocks on F250HD or F-350 either.

My truck is a 1980 F-350 4x4 400 auto with everything that was included in the trailer tow, camper special and snow plow prep packages and the bed is 8' and not an inch longer. Nothing really changed between 80 and 81 and the info above is actually from the 81 brochure.

there is no such thing as a 8.5 bed ford only had 6.5 and 8.0. they did have extended wheelbases which is why they could be had as a crew cab or super cab.

The late 60's early 70's Chevrolets had a camper special with a longer than 8 ft bed. I guess I got them confused with the Fords. Are you guys sure Ford didn't have a late 60's early 70's 8.5 ft bed to compete with Chevy and be able to use the bigger campers? A friend of mine had a early 70's Ford camper special, but I can't be sure about the bed size. It had the add-on dolly wheels underneath, to carry the extra weight I guess.
