I have a 1991 F-150 Lariat with what I believe has a 4.9L engine and a 4sp automatic tranny. My tranny shifts very hard from 3rd to 4th. It is almost a neck jerking experience, especially under load. When I get to about 49 MPH, I have learned to let off the gas so that it shifts smoothly, then I apply the gas again. What could be causing this rough shifting between those two gears? And another question. What transmission do I have? By that, I mean what brand. Tremec?
I have a '91 F-150 Lariat with a 4.9 engine and 4 speed automatic tranny. It shifts very hard from 2nd to third. It almost pops my neck it is so rough. I changed the fluid, and it still does it under power. But, at 49 MPH, I take my foot off the gas pedal, and it shifts smoothly. What is wrong with it?
it could be a sticking 3-4 shift valve or a bad/stuck accumulator for the 3-4 shift.
Do a complete trans FLUSH, not just change and see if it possiably gets better.
Try pulling the codes and see if anything is there....Mine started doing the same thing and It ended up being the MLPS = manual lever position sensor....replaced it and hard shift was gone....You can go to www.fordfuelinjection.com and it will tell you how to pull the codes and what they are for....Post what you find and someone will chime in and help you out...
