Brake Replacement - 97' Explorer 4x4
I have purchased Monroe premium pads and discs as replacements.
Step by step would be appreciated as well.
Never replaced brakes on a 97 Ford Explorer. Some calipers require a special tool to collapse the brake caliper, one must loosen the brake bleeder valve on the caliper when collapsing the caliper (have a empty container to catch the brake fluid).
Some calipers require a c-clamp to collapse the caliper, not sure what setup your vehicle has. The C-clamp you would use the old brake pad on the brake caliper unit, fit the c-clamp over the brake pad and caliper, and loosen the brake bleeder valve and tighten the c-clamp to collapse the caliper.
Make sure to keep the new brake pads and rotors clean with Brake Kleen Cleaner. They come in two varities, a green can which is safe on plastics and a red can which is not.

Good luck. Lets us know how it goes.
- Brake pads
- brake caliper grease
- wheel bearing seals for the front hub on rotor assembly
- Disk wheel bearing grease for front hub bearings
- 4 cans of brake kleen cleaner
- brake fluid DOT 3, to flush out old brake fluid when bleeding out the brakes
- If the rotors and / or drums size is over specs, those will need to be replaced.
- Make sure the part time locking hub assembly is installed flush with the rotors.
- Make sure to install anti rattle clips on only the inner brake pads
- Turn all rotors and / or drums.
