'95 Ranger Engine Component ID?

I have a 1995 Ford Ranger 2.3L 4-cylinder manual trans. w/ 94,000 miles.

Can anyone help me identify the part that is mounted on the right side of the engine and kind of looks like an enlarged alternator? It has a pulley and the timing belt is connected to it...

Haynes manual is no help. Any diagrams available?

1. What is this part?
2. What does it do?
3. What would happen if it needs to be replaced?

The rotating part inside the pulley was clicking and rotating only intermittenly this morning. When it stopped rotating, the idle got rougher/lower.

I think this part may be the culprit in my mysterious morning startup problems. (I've already changed wires, plugs, O2 sensors, cleaned fuel injector, changed fuel relay, cleaned MAF sensor, cleaned IAC Valve, etc. to no avail).

Thanks for your help!

I will keep it basic, although you seem to know your way around the engine. In the US, the RH side refers to the passenger side of the vehicle. The Alternator is mounted on the RH side. On the LH (drivers side) you will find the air conditioning compressor (if equipted) mounted above the power steering pump. The a/c will has a clutch that turns on and off the compressor. There will be an electrical connector going to the clutch and the compressor will have tubes coming out of the back going to the other a/c components. The FEAD (front end accessory drive) serpentine belt runs off the crank pulley and powers the components plus the water pump and fan. The timing belt is enclosed behind a front cover and is not visible without removing some components and the cover. Hope this basic explaination is not insulting and you will be able to determine what the component. Sounds like the a/c if it engages and the idle speed drops or runs a little rougher with the added load.

Thanks. The basic explanation is welcomed -- not insulting!

It sounds like that is the component I am speaking of. I did have the defrost on while I was starting up...

Perhaps I was just having the ususal mysterious startup problem that I've been having and the A/C compressor was just adding to it since the defrost was on?

Is it normal that the compressor was clicking (loudly) on and off? When I opened the hood to take a peek, I saw it rotate...stop...rotate....stop, etc.
