I started her up to leave work tonight and the engine temp warning light was on.She had been sitting for 8 hrs.and was cold its about 60 to 65 here tonight. The light stayed on for about 10mins flickering while I sat at a redlight and finally went out and stayed out . I didn't check for codes will do that in the am. Any ideas ?
hmm let me look to find out what else triggers that light to come on that kinda sounds like a pcm issue to me. does the truck function fine other than that?
I run a 1705 tuner and I usally keep it in tow safe mode but I kicked it up to hp.mode last week checking mpg. The only problems I have with the truck are Intermitent loss of cruise control and I need to change the glowplugs. I have been averaging 18.79 mpg over the last 6weeks it runs great. I did check the codes tonight and got a P0470 exhaust back pres sensor circuit error I have never had that before.
The light did'nt come on this morning when I started it up but when I left work it came on as soon as I started it . The light stayed on about 7 mins didnt flicker or flash like it did yesterday it just went out and stayed out . I really appreciate any help or advice . Thanks
I believe your right about the code since this is the longest I have ever had it in the hipo mode.I guess I'm going to start checking conections and wires thats all I can think of . Do you know if the temp guage works off the same sensor as the light because the guage seems to work the way it should even when the light is on. I have had it come on at different times now but only at start up and when the engine is warm it only stays on for about 2 mins. She still runs good enough to show a new chevy ss half ton its tailights and just walked away from him. Thanks for the reply.I will let you know if I find anything.
My '97 had its "engine temp" light come on right after I decided to wash the engine for the first time. Turns out that the sensor went bad. The sensor for the "engine temp" light is located on the front of the passenger side head just to the left of the waterpump as you look at it from the front of the truck. I thought the gauge sensor was the one on top of the water pump.
There is no reference to it in that picture. I just went and looked at my truck with a flashlight. It sits above the left side of the water pump. The electrical connector is the same type as the one that goes to the sensor on the top of the water pump(13). The wire that connects to it comes out of the same loom also. I wonder if this sensor was eliminated in later model years. It seemed redundant to me at the time.
Here's a link to a manual showing the location of my sensor. Click on "engine electrical" and then "engine connections, front view". The interesting thing is that they don't show an additional one on top of the waterpump. Also, if you click on "engine connections, top view" they show yet another location for a side mounted ECT. From the picture it is also apparant that my sensor mounts into the front of the block and not the head as I thought. It's pretty tough to see in there.
Jeff396 when the light came on did the temp gauge work normal if so maybe that's why this two one on the side and the one in front. I went out and checked and it has the front mount just like yours . I will pick a sensor up and change it out and let you know . Thanks those diagrams were very helpful and it does look like there is a difference between the early and the late .
Yes, the gauge worked fine and said all was normal while the light was on. I guess it's good to have a light to get your attention in case you don't notice the gauge climbing.
Well I picked up a sensor and went out to change it and it looked like I would have to pull the alt. bracket and idler pully And I didn't have the time to do it but I had pulled the wire off . So I put it back on pulled it back and forth a few times and lo and behold light has been operating correctly since. Thanks for the help I think I'm going to just hang on to the sensor just in case.
