Sequential turn signals

Hey, does anyone remember how Ford made the sequential turn signals work on the old T'birds?

I want to fab something like that, and I don't remember if there is a black box that does it, something I can buy. Or do I have to trigger relays with relays? Just starting to think about this, but if one of you have the answer maybe I can save some wear and tear on my neural circuits.

Thanks, Bdox

The old T-Birds used an electro-mechanical means of making the sequential turn signal. Here is how it worked:

Depending on your car application, there are now solid state methods of doing the job for many vehicles. Google "sequential turn signals".

The Cougar used the same mechanism. It was neat, with a small electirc motor that had a 3-lobed cam on it and switches that would activat each signal. God was that a pain to troubleshoot! But it was easy to fix though. There is something called a "Dynamite Stick" that they use now for those who want sequential lights. Being all solid state, it won't have nearly the mechanical complexity of the T-Bird/Cougar mechanism.

Look in the Mustang mags. I think Mustang Monthly had a conversion this month. As there is already someone out there producing the circuit, you won't have to fab much.

I bought a device off of eBay a couple years ago that I put on an '89 Grand Marquis. About $50 if I remember right. Worked fine, but I had to adjust the timing within the turn signal flasher, and I had to change the center bulb socket on each side to get them to flash with the other bulbs. Like ray said, I just googled "sequential turn signals" and a couple of companies popped up.
