I have recently installed a Used turbo off a 1993 on my 1990. I dont hear it whistle. Should I, if so what should i look for to see what might be wrong. It does spin free with my hand and with the engine at idle it will suck pretty good on my hand when i put it over the intake snorkel. I believe i have a leak where the Y pipe slides into the turbo would that cause troubles? I like to hear the turbo wind up so what can i do to achieve this?
thanks, Jeremy
What size exhaust do you have coming out of the turbo? When there are leaks in exhaust sometimes they whistle slightly... so listen for that, oh wait its a diesel. Id feel for hot gasses coming you but watch your hands...
Well its a stock sized downpipe but it goes right into a 4 inch exhaust after that. But i just cant hear the turbo spool up. Would the leak be the problem that is where the Y pipe goes into the input side of the turbo. It just slides together should i seal it off?
All i want to hear is the turbo whisle.
Jeremy
if I recall, you are running a nonwastegated Ats, correct?
the turbo whistle is slight, as you are only making 6-7psi max.
if from a stop, you get the rpms up to 2,200 or so right away, you can hear it.
mine whistles crystal clear at 3,300rpms with my trailer fully loaded :-)
a stock turbo off of a 93-94 u can't hear it whistle like a powerstroke i don't know if the 3" downpipe helps the sound bc i havn't done it yet. mine w/ 4" dual stacks the whistle is slight and only heard well if the radio is turned down or off. but with the 5sp i can hear the turbo despool like a semi when i shift
jboard, if you are leaking exhaust before the turbo it will hurt the boost, which in turn makes it not as loud.
Also the 2.25" ID outlet flange and the flattened out 2.25" ID excuse for a downpipe Ford used keeps the turbo well muted.
With a 3" all the way from the turbo and the ATS 3" outlet flange you will hear it spool.
Your truck will run better also.
They sell the parts seperately, which is what i wanted so i could do either stacks or something else cool that is nonstock looking... I ordered the 3" turbo exhaust flange and downpipe (2 seperate parts) over phone because they werent listed individually on hte webpage. Total was around $280 i think, shipping included.
I have only heard my stock turbo whistle when I was chained to a trailer that was stuck in the mud. I had the windows down, and the RPMs up.
until then, I had given up all hope of ever hearing my stock turbo. Given that I have a wastegated 7 PSI max boost stock turbo, that is all I could have hoped for.
Now that I have actually heard what it sounds like, I can sometimes hear it when loaded down with weight and pulling some hills, or similar. Not nearly as load as that day with the mud, though.
I just put my ATS turbo on a week ago, have the 3" downpipe and flange, with 3" exhaust all the way back. I here my turbo constantly, most times if it is idling in the driveway I can hear it whistling. It is the van series turbo, I guess, ATS called it the 085 series.
