Mountaineer Radio Problem

I have 2002 Mountaineer with 6-CD changer (all built in). The power to radio comes and goes. If the power is on, the radio may or may not have sound. Most of the time, the power is on, but no sound. If the bass is turned up (past 50%) then when the sound goes away you still feel and hear the bass but no sound. The sound comes and goes. I took radio out and reseated the connections in the back of the radio.... same problem.
Do you think this is a radio problem or is there a bigger problem in the vehicle... like maybe a bad ground?
