Tire noise

On my 2002 F150 SuperCrew - I noticed that the tires have suddenly began to "whine" while moving. They now sound like an aggressive mud tire but they aren't. The tires are the original BFG All Terrain AT (I believe) with only 23,000 miles on them. I have always rotated every 5,000 miles and kept the air pressure checked. A local shop said that I needed an alignment and rotation and my wife let them do it. They also said that the tires would "straighten" out after 200 miles. That didn't hapen so that was a $60 waste. The tires do not appear to have "feathered" either.
What could cause them to all of a sudden start this and is there a remedy besides new tires?

if you took it too a shop and they told you that an aliment would fix a tread wear problem then they didnt know what they were talking about. if you have uneven wear on a tire, because of an aliment issue, an aliment would not straighten the wear out. it will stop it from getting worse but there is no way to "straighten" a worn tire. I would take it to a real tire shop and have them check for uneven wear. Not saying you dont know what you are looking at you just never know. Also I dont beleave that Fords came with a BFG Tire. I thought they had contanentals (spelling?). GL

The store that my wife took the truck to IS a tire store. She was there to drop off the wheels from her car to have new tires mounted so I told her to ask them about the tire noise on my truck.
I'm absolutely certain that the tires are BFG and I bought this truck new.
I also dropped by my local Ford service dept. and asked them about the tires. They looked at all 4 and said that there wasn't an unusual amount of uneven wear. They then suggested to wait until they wear out and replace them.

This is just a thought. Having lived in Georgia, I know that the summers are long and hot. Not as long and hot as Houston but you still use your A/C for several months. Could this tire noise have been there all along and now that you don't need the A/C and are just using the vents and are opening the windows more you hear it? Just a thought.

Nope, that isn't the case. I rarely use the A/C. I like the windows open and fresh air better.

When you said whine you don't mean the power steering whine which is common on Fords. The tires will howl (woo woo) I never heard of a A/T making that much noise. You may want to get your wheel bearings checked one way of checking for noise is put the truck up on jack stands and run it in gear. You have to be carefull but its a way of eliminating the road noise from tires so you can hear if its a mechanical noise.

The only A/T tire I know of that howls bad is the Yokohoma Geolander A/Ts they howl like a super swamper they say they are quiet my azz they are.
