Guys, I recently found a truck in a junkyard with an all metal hood latch release with the cable and latching device (I'd like to have one of these seeing how easy it is to open the hood). Problem is there are no keys for it...has anyone had a locksmith adjust the locking unit and have it match your existing key before? Can the ignition locking assemblies be swapped out into the hood latch...reason being they both appear to share the same assembly - I can find another iginition switch, do the swap and just have two keys???
If there is no keys to it or anything else on the truck I think you can remove the lock cylinder and buy a new on from auto krafters or LMC. If there is a key for the ignition tryit in the hood lock. If it is an original hood lock for that truck it should be the same as the ignition. This may or may not be true. If you do happen to have a key work in both see if it opens the doors too. If it does Take the door locks hood latch assembly and ignition switch and put it in your truck. Those lock cylinders comeout some how with a paper clip or something pushed into that tiny little hole. I dont know if you need the key or not to get it out.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 02-Jun-02 AT 00:23 AM (EST)]Just find any key that will slide in the lock assembly.
You take it to a locksmith and have him either key the lock to fit the key.Or make a new key to fit the lock.
70's Locks take a trunk style key.
80's take an ignition style key.
It will Probably cost between $12-$15.
One is cheaper to have done than the other way.
It all a matter of being cost effective.
I have these done all the time.
Hopefully you got the matching release latch for your year vehicle.
You can't use an 80's latch with a 70's hood.and vice-versa.
It's on a 70's truck. I'm going to remove it tomorrow. Anyone know the paper clip end into the little hole trick???shop manual has little detail on how to remove the cylinders..
depending on how much your time and trouble is worth i would not get too deep into it unless it is really cheap (20.00 or less). they are on e-bay with keys and matching door and ign locks all of the time. there is a set right now and they are only 40.00 with keys. seems to me by the time you go and pull it and then go to the locksmith you have put a full day in and you may still end up with an unmatched set. just my .02, hawkrod
