Went and looked at a 76 F250 today with an NP205....
Only thing wrong with said truck is that the transfer case shifter is disconnected, and the driveshaft for the tcase to the front axle is spinning, but a lot slower than it should be for the speed of the vehicle, as in at 20 MPH you can count the RPMS of that shaft yourself as the truck goes by
The price is right regardless, should we just plan on pulling a tcase for a rebuild when it comes home/if it comes home?
We have a 76 that does the same thing. Do you know if the transfer case / lockouts / front axle / 4wd work properly? If I were you I'd try a couple of things to see if things are acting as they should though. With the hubs unlocked, I'd put the tranny in gear and put the TC in neutral, you should be able to spin the front drive shaft by hand. Then try locking the hubs, if both lockouts are working properly you shouldn't be able to turn the driveshaft anymore.
As far as why the front driveshaft turns for apparently no reason and at a slower rate, I'd guess harmless mechanical friction between gears or the movement of gear lube itself causing it to rotate. Either way, if everything else checks out, I wouldn't worry about the slow spinning front driveshaft while in 2wd...
oil drag go under the truck grab the drive swhaft can you spin it it's in 2 wd and the hubs are unlocked it just the gear oil spinnig the unloaded gears nothing to worry about usually once the gear oil heats up its not thick enuff to spin the front shaft and no it canot be in low range front and high rear one shift shaft work hi/lo the other works in/out on the front drive shaft
