Horn question...

Hi,

I'm trying to get my horn working on my 77 F150.

The brass pin at the bottom of the turn signal switch has 12v, but I don't get a ground when I push the horn button.

Is the ground supposed to be the center steering shaft? If so, I don't get any continuity from the steering shaft to ground. Is there supposed to be a wire or something that grounds the center steering shaft, or does the horn get its ground elsewhere when the horn switch is closed.

Thanks for your time!
John Thomas

My problem was my steering wheel had a gap in it and I didn't know why, so I pulled the wheel off and there was a circular piece of plastic with a metal nub sticking out of it, and that metal nub was suposed to be in a grove on the steering wheels back side, and it wasn't, put the nub back in it's correct place, and now I have a horn.

Other wise, check wiring to the horn.

Are you talking about a 78-79 steering wheel.Because i have the same problem with my 77 I can make my horns work at the relay. And when I tried a different column the horn worked. But that was a colunm I put together for a freind and had to give it back

Actually, the steering wheel is from a 79, but the column is from a 77. I know these don't jive together, but if I can find the source the 77s used for their ground, I can make this work. That's where I'm at, I just need a ground in the area of the turn signal switch.

When you take the horn pad off there are 2 wires there. If both are clipped in,Take the right wire and plug it into the hole instead of having it on the connecter.Try and use the horn and if that don't work try the other wire

Hello, the steering shaft is indeed the horn ground. There should be a wire at the part of the steering shaft/coupler underneath the hood. I have several 73-79's with the same prob. Most of them will blow if you turn the steering wheel some, then that completes the ground through the shaft when the gears are under load. The ground wire at the rubber coupler under the hood is probably not making good contact on one side of that coupler.

My 73 truck did the same thing. I got sick of the big steering wheel and the broken horn buttons. So I bought a grant steering wheel. Everything works now.

* Note:
The 78-79 horn systems are different depending on whether they have cruise control or not.

A 78/79 truck w/o cruise uses the regular horn circuit (yellow wire) without a horn relay.
A 78/79 truck with cruise uses the Regular non-cruise horn circuit...with an added horn circuit that runs through a relay behind the instrument cluster.

The earlier horns also run through a relay on the fender.

Do any of you have pics regarding the differences ?

The ground is located at the steering coupler (aka rag joint) and is the rubber circular joint located near the steering gear box. there should be a ground wire from one side of the steering coupler to the other side.
