HI Guy’s,
I have a ’97 F-150 SC 4X4 short bed with the 4.6 liter and 4.11 gears. I am going to be upgrading to a 2 or 3 year old Super Duty F-250 super cab long bed or crew short bed with the V-10 and 4X4.
My question is this, what can I expect for different turning radiuses between what I have now and the SD? I am pulling a trailer and would like to find out what to expect for backing it up into my driveway, etc.
The turn radius on my 04 CC F250 has the worst turn radius of any truck I have ever driven. I have had a 01 Dodge 2500 4x4. and 03 Yukon XL as well as a 90 2500 suburban.
Your F150 will do circle within the turn radius of a 04 or older F250.
I have a '00 F250 LBSC 4x4. Turning radius isn't fantastic, but it does fairly well for a vehicle with that long a wheelbase. It's about the same as my old truck, a '94 F250 LBRC 4x4. They had the steering stops set pretty far out on the old F250 TTB front ends. As BareBones said, '05s and up are supposed to be much better than '99 - '04.
I have a good friend with the same F150 configuration you currently have, and his truck will turn a noticeably tighter circle than mine will.

I guess one man's "fairly well" is another man's "what the hell..."
I drive the exact same truck, 00 supercab longbed, and it maneuvers like a school bus. I don't even try to wedge it into a parking lot spot anymore, I'll just go way out yonder where I can use a second spot to swing in, and hoof it.
Don't get me wrong, I like my truck. But if maneuverability is important to you, save your nickels and get an '05 with the coil springs.
I noticed the turning radius is a lot larger. Of course I went from a '98 Ranger to an '05 CC F250. Even still, I can hook a u-ie on the 3 lane roads around here. I would have fun on a little dirt road though, watched my bud do that in an '02 F350 DRW, took a few forward-back motions.
Wheelbase and steering angle are the main things that affect turning radius. Wheelbase is pretty much dictated by the bed/cab configuration you want. Steering angle is controlled by a number of considerations, usually the primary one is front suspension type. Within F250's, the '05's and up are better than the '99 - '04's, which are better than the older TTB's.
I don't want to turn this into a brand bashing thread, but if you want to experience "what the hell...", try maneuvering a long bed, extended cab, '88 - '98 Chevolet/GMC. I had the displeasure of that experience about 14 years ago at a part-time-while-going-to-college job. Got used to 9-point turns with those trucks.
If you have to park way out there, or go around the block to get a better angle, then you just get to drive your truck more and others get a better look at it!!!!
Yes I'm a new PSD owner and wish I could drive in my sleep so I could drive my truck more!!!! Last truck was an 86 F250 4x4 SCLB. I thought that song was a joke about 40 acres to turn my rig around, I didn't know it was about my old truck and a travel trailer!!

Scott, I've just done almost exactly what you are thinking about. Sold my '99 F150 Supercab shortbed with 4x4 and bought an '02 F250 SD Supercab 4x4 with full bed.
There's a huge difference in driving the two trucks. The turning radius is among the first things you'll notice. Its not horrible, but you have to relearn how to park and make corners. I've simply had to force myself to go slow and make a concious effort to know where the front corners are.
Your F150 experience won't provide you with any "seat of the pants" instincts in driving the SD. Seating position, ride, steering.... its all different.
I really like my new SD and glad I made the change, but have almost made crumpled steel out of a few cars near the space where I wanted to park.

I'll give you that, I don't have any apples-to-apples experience with other
makes.
I graduated from a 1990 F150 supercab shortbed. I knew the longbed would hurt maneuverability, but the difference is more than just 18" of wheelbase.
my 01 350 crew cab long bed has a better turning radius then my old 88 ext cab longbed. we've got a telephone pole right on the corner of our driveway and i had to swing way out in the other lane to hang a right turn. with the 01, i can almost keep it in the right lane. heck, it turns almost as well as my dads 97 ext cab short bed....
