I need some help. I didnt know where to post about this at so I thought i'd post it here. I just changed my plugs about a month ago. Ok the other day I was just checking out every thing under the hood like I all ways do. And 3 of my plugs where so lose I pulled them out with my hand. And 4 of the 8 plugs are covered in this clear super sticky goo. It's like sap from a tree. I cleaned them off with B-12. And put them back in. And I put them in tight not to tight. Just checked them agian today and it's the same thing so lose they where all most falling out. And covered in the clear super sticky sap. What is this, And how are get working lose like this? i've asked every one I know. And they are just as stumped as I am. can any one help me out with this? Is my truck sick!
That clear sappy stuff is Di-electric grease and is SUPPOED to be there. It prevents corrosion and aids conduction.
The plugs Keep coming loose,Hmmm ?
What is the number on the plugs and do they & the threads in the head look stripped ?
How much torque did YOU put on them when you re-installed them ?
Nomad - was the clear sappy stuff there when you changed the plugs? If not, it doesn't appear to be a 'natural' occurrence. If you didn't put Di-electric grease in the spark plug boots and it wasn't there before, it is weird - period. Wipe everything clean - plugs and boots and see what happens. FYI - if everything is ok, the apply some Di-electric grease yourself - it is good stuff and it is not used often enough.
As for the plugs - I agree with Dennis - check your threads - both on the plug and on the head. If all is well, then make sure you are tightening them down enough. Is it the same plugs that are loose or is it different ones?
Does your hood lock? Did you tick anyone off recently? Just one thing that comes to mind - some one may be having some fun at your expense. Not as bad a sugar in the tank, but definately annoying.
My Two Cents!
no the plugs didnt have Di-electric grease . On them when I put them in. And I did put them in tight. And no, no one is mad at me. They know better then to mess with my truck I do have a funny sound when it's running. The only thing I can say it sounds like is like a Diesel motor. The way they clack clack.
Are you sure you put the right plugs in? Are they too long? Do the electrodes look good when you take them out?
The only thing I can see making a clacking noise is compression leaking past the plug (wrong thread diameter) or they are too long and are hiting the tops of the pistons. The later should stop running very quickly if it is happening.... You will either smash the electrode or punch a hole in your pistons.
Did you save the old plugs? Can you verify the new ones are exactly the same?
Holy cow. I don't feel so bad now. Except for the clear white stuff I have had the exact thing happen twice to the plugs in my 1970 390. What I narrowed it down to was this. The spark plug socket was binding on the head. The way I discovered this is I was installing the plugs and back on #4 I could not get my socket to come off of the plug after I had tighened it. It was on TIGHT. I wiggled it around enough and finally got the socket off. Then I reached in and felt the plug. IT WAS LOOSE! I need to go to a thinner wall socket. In the mean time I just make sure my socket is down on the plug just enough to grip it. Hope this helps,
Lee
Well! Now that I think of it my socket dose the same thing on my plugs. I cant get the damn thing off of them. maybe thats why they are comeing lose. I dont know if I would have ever thought of that.
know what this means! NEW TOOLS!!! yee-haa. But what do you think about that goo? It kinda has a gas smell.
Thanks a ton Lee
