All Wired Up Wrong

Hey Guys, It's Me Again!

I followed the wrong diagram for converting the 95 130 amp alt. over to the 85 F150 and must of shorted something out in the alt, I hope? I'm going to take it to a alt./starter shop tomorrow and get it checked out and/or maybe rebuilt. I have checked into getting a new one but every alt. that I've look at has a different type of plug and I don't know where to the pug for the different alt.'s. Maybe I'll get right this time around. I'll let you guys know what happens next!

Chris

What wiring diagram did you use?
Did you use this one?
If so I do not think you could have hurt it.

Take a look at this URL, it will tell you all about whatever plug you have.

That one was for a Charge Indicator Light and you said you had an Ammeter.
I do not think it would have hurt it any. It would not charge or charge very little with that print.

The alt. shop said it wasn't hurt, brought it home , re-installed it but still couldn't get it to charge. Finally after calling te alt. shop two or three times I think I've finally got it! It's charging about 14 volts all the time now. That won't hurt anything will it? The guy said at the alt. shop it shouldn't have power on the lt grn/red strp wire all of the time... but that's the only way that I can get it to charge. What do you think? I don't know myself this is a first for me!

Thanks,
Chris

The grn/red strp wire comes from the Ign. Switch, It tells the alt. to charge or not to charge.

The Alternator is unlike the old generator of years ago. The generator held a residual magnetic field and you could start a truck without a battery in it by popping the clutch and it would run until you turned it off.

The Alternator will not hold a residual magnetic charge and has to have an exciter voltage in is field to charge, you take the battery cable off while running and it will die in a few minutes.

Key on, power on grn/red strp wire, charge.

Key off, no power on grn/red strp wire, no charge.

I do not have a clue how you have it wired up but I would think that the Reg. in the Alt. would take care of the voltage level.

Normally if the battery is low and you start a truck with a volt meter on it, it would read about 12.5V and would very and then it would slowly clime on up to about 13.8V and stay there. If it keeps climbing pass that then you will have big problems.
