88 ranger .. help ?

I bought an 88 ranger off my cusion an they had drove it to the back yard an parked it, an i went out there fired it up by jumping the starter solenoid cant even get a click on the ignition an it fired up.

So i bought a new starter solenoid put it in an tryed to jump it an it cranked over but wouldnt run an my lights nothing would come on.

I got a new ignition starter (where you put the key sorry if im calling the parts the wrong name) put that in an couldn't get a click out of it so i jumped the solenoid again an it cranked but wouldnt run an atleast my lights came on this time.

So I have no clue what could be keeping it from running as far as I can tel lthis truck has had a bit of rigging done to it but if anyone has any ideas what it might be it would be appriciated, im thinking a relay might be bad but im not sure :-(

Not sure what drive train you have but maybe the original problem was if it is a stick you have to push the clutch pedal down to the floorboard before it will crank.

Next problem, I am not sure you have the wires back on the starter solenoid right.

There should be a Big black (Starter Cable) and a smaller Red with a green stripe (Power to Ignition System while cranking) on one side and all the rest go on the other side with the Positive Battery cable (RED) except for the small Red with light blue stripe and it goes on by itself on the small screw threads.

Make sure you find all of the wires that came off and put them back on, sometimes one can get away from you.

Did you replace the lock cylinder or the ignition switch? The lock cylinder is where you insert the key, but the ignition switch is mounted under the dash, on top of the column. The ignition switch under the dash is the electrical part of the keyswitch.

The top lock cylinder part of the column actuates a rod, which runs down the column to the electrical switch under the dash. On the larger trucks this rod and mechanism up in the column can break, or a gear can get stripped. If you want to see if this is the problem, take the shrouds off the column. You should see a rod going down the top of the column under the shrouds. When you turn the key to start, "help" this rod with your hand, and see if the situation improves.
