I have a 66 F-100 4x4 org 352 in it. The problem is i have all kinds of smoke coming out of the breather cap on the valve covers when i give her some gas. My oil pressure is good. It purrs like a kitten just sitting there. Even when i try to drive it she runs fine but smokes like crazy. checked the oil and its good. I just came back from the deer hunt and i might have pushed her a little hard climbing stuff the 4wheelers were haveing a tuff time making but hell shes "BUILT FORD TUFF". So do you think the old motor is shot? I sure hope its some thing simple or the wife will start in about my spending money on the old beast.
What you discribed sounds like "blow by". This happens when the piston rings and cylinder walls wear, allowing combustion gases into the crankcase. a compression test might verify this, but the best test is a cylinder "leak down" test.
hey Bob i am getting no smoke out of the pipes. It just looks like im starting the old peterbuilt on a cold winters day with smoke rolling out of the breathers
Just for g.p. pull the dipstick, check the oil for a gasoline odor before you start up. My truck ran fine for months with a small leak. Occasionally I would smell gas while driving around. Drove me nuts, never saw a leak. Didn't figure it out till the pump went completely out and specks of metal showed in my next oil change.
Did you check your PCV valve? It's purpose is to draw out crankcase vapors that leak by the piston rings. The valve should rattle when you pull it out of the valve cover and shake it. Spray a healthy dose of carb spray in each end of the valve, shaking in between sprays to clean it out. If this doesn't stop your blowby then its time for a set of piston rings. If the rings are good, you should be able to set a small piece of newspaper over the opening in the valve cover (oil cap removed) and the pcv vacuum will suck the paper onto the valve cover and hold it there with the engine running.
