1978 F150 CUSTOM STEPSIDE 4X4. I just purchased this truck today. Had to haul it home. It has the original 351 with 4 spd. NP 205. Here is a list of problems that need fixed to make it road worthy. Brakes, gas tank needs cleaned out, Clutch fork slipped out of bellhousing and off of the throwout. My biggest concern is the way the whole front end of the truck moves from side to side when I turn the steering wheel. It does this without turning either one of the front tires. I am relativly new to the old ford 4x4s, so any help is very apprec. Can anybody tell me what the problem is and what is involved with getting it fixed? Also, I would like to know what componets need replaced when putting a 4 inch susp. lift on this truck. OH ya, The front (bars) that go from side to side (steering componets) are bent upwards a little. Are they supposed to be bent or are they supposed to be perfectly straight? I gave 400.00 for this truck. I thought it might be a rare find since it is a steps. Did I get ripped? Thanks for any help.....
Hi,I would check your drag link bushings. It wouldn't hurt to check the rest of your bushings because they are only rubber bushings from the factory. Some drag link bars I have seen on like 77 on down are like that bent upward a little bit.I just put a 4" suspension lift in my 79 shortbox and the only thing I changed up front was the coil springs and shocks no alignment was needed. You do have a rare find and I don't think you got ripped.
