Transmission Replacement

79 F150 2WD with a 351m and a C6 transmission, 150,000 miles. I am going to have to replace my transmission soon as it takes longer and longer each day to engage into drive when I first start the truck. I have pulled the engine before and had the transmission 'out' (lowered a couple of inches to work on the exhaust) so I am aware of what I have to do physically to get the tranny out. My question regards what kind of tranny to replace the stock one with. I am content with another stock tranny but if there is another option that shifts better or will last longer I would like to go that route. Do you think I should have mine rebuilt, or turn mine in and get a rebuilt tranny from Advance Auto or NAPA. I have a Jasper shop about 20 minutes from my place if you think they would do the best job. Any suggestions would help a lot. Thanks!

Be cautious about exchaning it with a tranny shop. You may just get one off the shelf that doesn't have the heavy duty parts a truck one usually comes with.

you could have someone rebuild it, but make sure the shop does good work, there are alot of people who rebuild autos, but don't do it right. Jasper would be a good idea, they do great work, and have a warranty

I agree with you guys. I think it would be best to have a reputable shop rebuild it. Do you think I should have it rebuilt different? Is there a way to make it stronger without affecting shifting or daily driving?

I don't want to offer you false hope but....

Have you ckecked the filter? I have had two "dead" trannys spring back to life due to a lack of proper oil/filter change maintenance by previous owners.

The filter was "gunked" up and it took a while before the fluid would flow properly. Hence the long time to engage drive.

Changed the filters/fluid and the problem went away. Was the chapest tranny rebuild I've ever done.

The filter idea has been suggested before. I changed the fluid and filter at 106,000 when I first bought the truck and again at 112,000 when I rebuilt the engine. I have put about 35,000 miles on it since. How often should I replace the filter? I don't mind doing it as a precaution, but it is always messy. Thanks for the responses.
