The other day i drove home from work in my 76 f250, 360, pretty much stock truck. No problems, noises or anything out of the ordiary. Not less than 2 hours from when i got home i decided to head back out again only this time i started my truck and there was no power steering. So i check the fluid level, look for anything unusual and find nothing. So my question is, Do power steering pumps fail like that? Work great one miute and not at all the next? My truck still isnt making any odd noises. I will also mention that this is a newer syle power steering...not 76... So any input you guys have would be sweet! Thanks in advance!!!!
That doesn't sound right, mine is also the upgraded from 79 type and it started acting up. It would come and go, seemed to be related somehow to rpm. I bought a lifetime unit for about $40.
When you call around for a price, ask about the pullie, they require a special puller (harbor freight sell for about $10). I spend a few hours trying to remove it with a gear puller then paid $10 to have it removed.
you also need a "tool" to press the pully back on. they usualy supply one but its made of cheap tiawan steel. get yourself a good case hardened bolt and use two washers together with a little grease between them to keep things from binding.
I used the bolt supplied with my pump and it was a real POS, i almost broke it off and didn't even get the pulley on half way
thanks for the input guys!!! It was the pump...and the parts store let me raid there tool box for a puller...had it done in 20 minutes...SWEET!!!!!!!Power steering RULES!!!!!
