I have a 79 f250 custom with a 351M. The engine blew a few months ago so i bought a used one from a friend. After putting the engine in, it started right up. Well, lately all that has been happening when you turn the key is you get a fast paced clicking sound from either the starter solenoid or the starter itself. Could anyone please help me fix the problem? Thanks.
Sounds like a dead battery or poor connection on one of the battery cable connections. Ensure you haven't accumilated corrosion on any of the the cables, connections or battery posts. It also could be a bad silenoid but I would start with the most common and easiest thing, the connections. Then try a jump start from another vehicle.
One old trick that works when cleaning battery and associated wire connections is to mix baking soda and water (about half and half) and coat a small wire brush with it. Use that to clean the connections. It will wash off a lot of corrosion. I also use the small end of a battery post cleaning brush to scrub all connection points, the posts, the starter relay, etc. Also clean the hot post on the starter, and one that many forget; the ground wire on the block.
I just replaced the solenoid. But the power wire gonig to the battery doesnt have the greatest connection to the battery connector. I plan on replacing it soon, but i was wondering if it could be anything other htan that.
its possible. my solenoid just went in my truck and to figure that out, i just had my dad stand under the truck and we jumped the starter instead of the battery. try that and see if it turns. could be a bad ground as well. i replaced that also. the starter was fine, but i replaced the fusible link to the ignition, starter solenoid, both battery cables, cleaned the termiinals, and the thing turns no problem now.
