Need carb help!

I just put a new carb on my 76 F-150 (6 cyl, auto) and now the climatic choke is acting up. The choke heater tube that runs down to the exhaust manifold is broken off right at the manifold and will not allow the heat to rise, causing my choke not to fully open. Does anyone know where I can find one of these tubes? I have been unsuccessful at the parts stores in my area. Also, do I just need to drill out the little stub that is remaining in the manifold? I would hate to mess something up is there is a better way. Thanks...

Just use 1/4" copper tubing, it's a piece of cake!!! Oh, and yes, drill out the stub that was left in your manifold. But don't drill to far down.

If that does'nt
suit your fancy.
Go to a wrecker and get an electric choke housing for it.
It wires up to the field connection on the alternator.

Most of the following is from the above thread.

If the fitting on the carb (on the choke housing) is still there, you can go to the auto parts store (I know Advance Auto carries them) and get one of two types of kits. One of the kits is for headers and one is intended for the stock manifolds. The header kit clamps on with a hose clamp and the manifold kit has a stud-like thing that you hammer into the stock hole. If the stock hole is filled with the rusted remains of the original tube you have to drill it out. If you are using the stock location the choke is set up to draw in a little exhaust. If you are just drawing in heated air (as in the header kit) you should set the choke a little leaner (I think it's 1 or 2 notches, but the instructions with the kit will tell you). The two brands I've seen are "Help" and "Mr. Gasket". You can order the header kit from Jegs if you can't find it locally.

See also threads "auto-choke with headers" and "Electric Choke"

I found the package for the manifold kit (I only used the header kit, but I bought both). It is made by Motormite under their "HELP!" brand. It is called a Universal Choke Tube Kit and is part number 76850. I found it on a rack when looking for something else. In the store (Advance Auto) there is a whole rack of various "HELP!" accessories like the little plastic window *****, carious caps and other small parts. It has pretty good instructions on the back. If you only have access to locally owned auto shops they will surely know what you are asking for. National chains are iffy, but several have websites and you may be able to find exactly what you want and either order it or print out the description and take it too them. I've done both and had pretty good success.

And that's all I know about chokes!

Good luck trying to get that piece drilled out...you may need to remove the manifolds to get to it well. I'd check for a replacement choke stove from an auto parts store. I've had one for a while and it works well - but mine's also an electric assist. It (after market unit) clamps to the exhaust pipe and routes up to the carb via tube. Just make sure the end will work - it may need to be flared to fit into the choke housing correctly.
