I noticed a few weeks ago that the PS fluid level in my truck was right on the bottom of the hash marks. Since I only have 12k miles on an '05 I guess it came like this from the dealer. I am just wondering if I should drop a little bit in to get it 1/2 way up the hash marks or leave it reading low. So far I have not noticed anything on the way she handles. Drives like a charm.
Edit: hrmm, I was thinking as I hit submit, maybe this works better in the plain ole SD thread, I guess the gassers, 7.3s, and 6.0s share the same PS system...
The factory fill is generally towards the bottom of the stick most times.. Make sure you check it 'hot' as fluids expand when heated.. You could add some PS fluid to bring it up to the mid level, but this is a remote tank/reservoir and it holds plenty of fluid to supply the pump with just the bottom of the stick registering..
ATF in the power steering unit?! I never heard of such a thing. Disclaimer... I am NOT a mechanic.
So one vote for ATF one vote for Miscible PS. Is one going to bet better then the other? I do not mind paying $10 extra for a bottle of whatever is better, these trucks are not quite disposable like a Kia
Offically FORD calls for MERCON® Multi-Purpose ATF Transmission Fluid (Ford XT-2-QDX) to be used in the steering/hydro boost system.. 'Basically'... It's all just hydraulic fluid in variations/additives, "BUT" with all the packaging/vendors you want to make sure that the fluid you use meets Fords specs.. If your unsure than Mercon is a better bet.. Also, 'this' ATF also known as Dextron III/Mercon can not be used in the Auto trans/5R110/Torqshift..

Personally, I would take back to the dealer and have them recheck everything related to the power steering system. Ford will check steering related components and alignment up to 12,000 miles or so.
To ask them to look for leaks and top off should not be a problem for them to do. Just ask what kind of Mercon AT fluid is used in your SD truck and you will be fine.
Why pay for a pint or quart of AT fluid when all you need is a little bit (and they under-filled it).
Good luck and good thing your checking your fluids... you never know.
