I have a 98 F150 4.6 Liter V8 that is giving me fits. It won't start sometimes, and other times it just quits while driving down the road.
I've changed the fuel pump, wires and plugs, and coil packs.
When it fails to start, it seems like it is when it's hot outside. At first it tries to start and sounds like it is running on half it's cylinders or something, then it just cranks without any sign of ignition. After setting a couple hours, it fires up no problem. It will then run for a few days with no problem until it starts acting up again.
Haven't got much help from Ford mechs so far. HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
PS. The engine is not over heated when this happens.

have you checked the fuel pressure when this happens? If not check it, sounds like something in the tank is clogging it up at certain points and then after sitting it moves away somewhere else in the tank and works fine.
Kind of like the old days when you could put a ping pong ball in fuel tank and when driving it would get sucked up to the inlet and clog it then die. once there is no draw the ball would move away and start and run fine. (the ping pong ball is a example) If that is the case you may need drop the tank and clean it up. I take it there is no cpu codes when this happens right?
You should use a code reader to get the codes - the easiest way to do this without spending $$ on a code reader is to go to your local Autozone, Schucks, and some NAPA auto parts places - most of them will read your codes for free. Depending on the reader they use some will just give you a number - write it down and post it here someone will be able to tell you what it means. Others will have a number and tell you what it's for (ie. a bad sensor, etc.) - but that's the easiest thing to do in order to rule some things out from the get-go.
You said you changed the pump, have you changed the filter? Mine would die once in a while when coming to a stop, hasn't done it since the new fuel filter. It does sound like some stuff loose in the tank though. Have you run fuel inj. cleaner through recently?
the ping pong ***** would easily go into the old leaded tanks with the wide open mouth. no way with unleaded mouths on cars.
is't the pump inside the tank or is my thinking wrong? if so was it dirty when you took it apart. don't you have to drain the tank all gunk shuold have come out, HMMMM
To recap, 98 F150 v8 won't start intermittently, quits once in awhile while driving, wait two hours and it cranks up no problem. Changed fuel pump, plugs and wires, coil packs, still does it.
Took it to the local Ford geniuses. they could find nothing. No codes. What now? Get rid of the P.O.S.????
What does it feel like fuel or electrical? electrical will just shut down, Fuel will keep trying to run chugging persay.
There was some other threads with these symptoms and it turned out there was a hole in the filler tube that would would cause no pressure build up. It could be as small as a pin hole. the dealer could not see it because it was covered in mud or crudd. normally it should throw a code but not always.
Fuel related I think. At first it will try to fire but not on all cylinders, then it will just crank with no sign of igniting. @ hours static and it will start fine. Damn thing.
I can't explain it but check the filler tube and return tube for any pin point leaks. Let me ask you this has it slowly gotten worst the more you drive? (through the months)
