My dad has a 79 F100 wit ha 302. The 302 has headers, 4 brl intake, mild cam. C6 and 3.55 rearend gears.
Last summer it ran 200 degrees with the air on. This March it started running around 210 with the air unhooked. He makes a 50 mile trip to work everyday and on hot afternoons the truck gest 210-215.
This is not good. It hasn't boiled over yet but its got to be close.
In attempt to fix this we have changed the radiator, water pump, thermostat, carburator, plugs, rotor, distributor cap.
This one has us baffled. We have talked to the pro's and there baffled. Everything in our heads tells us it should run cool on the interstate and hot around town. But it runs hot on the interstate and 180 around town. We've ran out of ideas. The next thing to try will probably be swapping heads.
We didn't change anything before it started getting hot. This is a proven setup for 4 years. Never done this before. What would make one just start overheating like this?
Distributor does its thing. Fan is on correctly. We have narrowed it to a internal motor problem. Everything on the outside that pertains to cooling has eaither been replaced or checked out. This has been a working setup for 4 years without a hiccup. Nothing was changed until the problem started happening.
This is a left field suggestion but put a vacuum gauge on it. If if moves alot at about 2500 rpm, you may have a cracked intake manifold. Had this happen on a 360 I had in one of my 74 F 100's. It cracked between the heat for the carb and the intake runner. At idle, no leakage detected and the truck idled fine. At speed, the heat went thru the roof but it still run good but not as strong as always. Dang near drove me nuts trying to find it.
TT,
An often over looked source of heat is the automatic transmission. The C4 is often mated with the 302, not the C6. I had catastrophic overheats until i changed my fluid and filter. The tranny worked fine until it would overheat tragically at which time the tranny would slip. Changing the fluid and filter made all the difference.
Consider it.
