Harmonic grinding & "thunk" at startup???

Hi Everyone:

I have an '01 PSD CC dually, 92k. When the PSD is running, there is a sound I can only describe as "grinding", about every two seconds. This occurs at idle and while moving. The tachometer does fluctuate slightly with this grinding. Additionally, occasionally, at startup, there is a "thunk" that appears to be coming from the inside of the passenger footwell. It is loud and can be felt while starting.

I purchased the truck in Jan, 05 with 76k. Do only lightweight hauling so far (> 1k lbs), have changed the oil/filter at 5k and fuel filter every other oil change. I get 18.2 mpg (hand calculated) since I bought it and have noticed no decrease in mileage lately, although my "problems" are pretty new.

If you could head me in a direction to get this fixed, I would appreciate it.

Thanks for your time,
John

hi John and welcome aboard ... the thunk is prob the air door on ventilation system. put the selector in off before starting and see if it goes away. the grinding sound, is it when wheels turn or just the motor idling ? I have had my truck make a horrendous sound by picking up a stone behind the brake rotor. if it is at engine idling, it may be the belt tensioner going south, the water pump (which will show up at the weep hole). other than that its pretty tuff to diagnose without more info. hope this helps you out.

Welcome to the forum John.
Bilder's right about the thunk. They all do that if you leave the heater controls on during startup. Not a problem at all.
The grind. Again what bilder said. In addition, possibly the torque converter is making noise. But they usually only do that at engine idle speed from what I have been able to gather reading here on the forum.

Take off your serpentine belt and start it up. See if the grinding goes away, if not, no tensioner or water pump issues.
