If it's the little white plastic job with the BIG nut, and the little button that the pedal hits...I'm not surprised. I've broken half a dozen of these things over the years. If the plunger gets just a little cockeyed, the switch will jam all kinds of ways. usually the back end cracks out. Anyway, what I do now when I buy a new one is to put superglue in all the seams and let it dry. So far this has worked. I would say just replace it. They are cheap.

The only way to know is make the pedal stick down while you are parked. Then crawl under the dash and look at the light switch - see if it's holding the pedal down. If it is, replace the switch. If the pedal isn't even touching the switch then you have a brake problem. Most often the pedal not returning is caused by bad master cylinder, bad booster or dirty/rusted linkage between booster and pedal.

Let us know what you find.
