5-speed transmissions

I have a '78 f150 (they are awesome) it has the 4-speed but to improve gas mileage I wanted to put a 5-speed in from a '85? or '88 but I don't know if the bolt pattern from the bell housing is the same or what i would have to do? Anybody know anything?

It can be done, but we need to know more. What engine does the '78 have? Is it 2wd or 4x4?
