Change oil pump?

2001 F150 Crewcab. Can you just drop the pan, change the oil pump and put the pan back on, or is there more to it? Thanks for any info.

On a 4.6 or 5.4 there's more to it than that.
The oil pump slides over the front of the crankshaft. You have to remove the front cover, timing chains etc.
It's not a real easy job
Why do you want to replace it?

To rehash what I had posted on another thread: When I crank it up ONLY in the morning or after it has been setting for 8 or 10 hours, the oil pressure us good for about 10 seconds. Then the oil light comes on and the gauge drops to 0. I can rev the engine and it jumps back up and the light goes out. A few seconds later it does the same thing. This goes on for about 5 to 10 times. After it quits, it is good for the rest of that day. Some has suggested that the pump might be losing its prime. Some said it might be the sensor. I'm no wrench, but if the sensor was bad why would it react only when I rev the engine. I understood that it would react with anything more than 7 lbs. I'm going to replace the sensor, but I was just looking down the road with a pump replacement. P.S. It doesn't make any noise during the morning ritual. Thanks.

Before I pulled the engine apart I would install a manual oil pressure gauge and verify the pressure. A bad sender could cause the problem.

Thanks, I think I remember you saying that on another thread. Can't you get one on a hose that just screws in where the sending unit is?

Yes that's what we have at the dealership.
I'm not sure where you could get one without buying a shop quality (pricey) one.
Maybe a local shop would lend you theirs?
