you're trying to make a silk purse out of a Sow's Ear----The load cacacity of the axle can't be increased---dana established the maximum safe load capacity when they made the axle-----The best thing for you to do is just go buy yourself a "1-ton truck.........The dually's have longer studs to accomodate dual wheels on the rear----besides the single rear wheel f350's with a GVW of 9,200 lbs. used a load range "E" tire without having dual rear wheels at all!!!------------i.e. a "camper special" or super camper special---whichever is the correct name!!!fd :-X11
I see what your saying and I would go out and buy a F350 if...A) I could find a 73-79 F350...and B) I could afford one. I got this truck for free, and I'm set on making it as close to a one ton truck as possible.
I went to a salvage yard with a tape measure and measured the I-beams of a couple of 80's F350's and they are shorter and use different mounting points. There were no 73-79 F350's in the yard to measure. In my 1979 Ford service manual they refer to the I-beams in two groups, the F100-F150 and the F250-F350. How similar are the F250 and the F350 I-beams? Can I bolt in F350 I-beams and springs?
Also, I have decided to use a Dana 70 instead of the 60. Does a 80's dana 70 have the spring mounts in the same spot as a Dana 60? I would measure them myself but I couldn't get under the trucks to do it.
I found a rust free 67-72 cab and front clip in the salvage yard...what would be needed to bolt this onto a '76 chassis? I know somebody here has tried it.....
Ben , I wouldn't even begin to give you advise on which cabs will fit which frames---If I was you I would start looking for a ROLLING FRAME from "super camper special" with a gvw of 9,200 or 9,000---it will have a d70 rear axle and a front axle rated to match the d70---and then consider selling the 76 you have and use that money to find a complete cab that will match the rolling chassy that you have acquired!!!!!!!!You obviously must have the knowledge and moxy to do all the work necessary for the switchover---that's a whole lot of work to say the least-----There are lots of folks on this website who can give you much better advise than I--IFFF they will just respond---there are some very Smart people on this website who can help you , if they so choose---be patient!!!fd :-X11
