FWD

Has anyone thought about putting a front wheel drive setup on their project truck?

I was just curious.

I personally wouldn't, but the thought just entered my mind.

There are a couple of them on this board - one is a full size caddy. While not what I want as my trucks are used for towing, I would use one if when when I build a car. I have been watching for a 50 style Ford two door - maybe someday!

Actually, what I meant to say in my question was has anyone thought of a FWD (front wheel drive) setup in a 48-60 F100 F250 truck.

It would be interesting, I think.

IT could be from an engineering standpoint. It would be fairly difficult though, as you would have to completely reconfigure the front end.

That's what I was thinking.

Unless you joined the two frames together.

It was just a thought, not a plan.

I can't either, but I'm sure someone has tried just for the sake of doing it.

I saw an old Dodge humpback panel in a Streed Rodder magazine years ago that was front wheel drive, using a Caddy set up. The owner was wheelchair bound and entered and exited teh humpback from the rear. The FWD allowed him to have a low flat floor in the back to roll his chair into.

Here in Albuquerque there used to be a trike apparatus running around that had the front drivetrain from a Toronado attached to a frame which supported a seat and a rear wheel. That had to have been a kick in the pants to drive!!

The truck in the link is front-wheel drive (But it's a 1948 Chevy COE). I first saw it at the Southwest Street Rod Nationals in Oklahoma City. He tried to climb a small hill to get to a road that went around the Fairgrounds, but front tires spun and he didn't make it up. I didn't understand it. A year or two later I saw it in Classic Trucks Magazine. I think it has a 500 cubic inch Caddy with a corresponding sub-frame (Might have been the whole frame?). Here it is:

You can't get any more simple than a 55-F100, or there abouts.

A few companies have made FWD trucks from the factory. The reason being they get better traction and do not slide around like a rear wheel drive truck.
