Need some help here. The starter on my 89 F-250 is dead and I'm going to replace it. I've removed the two easy-to-see bolts on the bottom, but there must be at least one other bolt topside. Can anyone help me out with this one? My Chilton's manual which came with the truck is a total p.o.s. and no help at all.
I'm working blind and fighting sludge and crud from a very old oil leak. The starter is a Mitsubishi gear-reduction type.
Thanks
Max
Yep changed mine the other day u will be suprised how much quicker your new starter cranks over. There is one more bolt on the top it takes a few extentions to get to where you can ratchet your ratchet but you can get it. Look at your new one and see there the top bolt hole is that will help you out.

easiest way for me was to guide & hold socket while wife cranked on rachet w about 24" of extension worked pretty good trher isnt a lot of room to get it out after all bolts are removed.
Thanks guys.
The top bolt had about 1/2" of crud over it completely covering it up. Once I found that, It was relatively easy to get out with a combination of extensions. Gave the area a good cleaning while the wife took the old starter to NAPA. Since I didn't have the new one yet, I wasn't sure if I should be looking for one or two more bolts. Got her going in short order after that. Spins over very fast!
Thanks to all who replied.

Like I've posted in other threads about starter replacement; It's a good idea to install an extra ground cable from the battery negative to one of the (easy to reach) starter mounting bolts. Over time enough oil and crud will get all over that new starter and your ground to the flywheel housing suffers, starts building resistance (and heat) and ruins that one too.
It's just a worthwhile cheap backup, since a lot of these engines really like to dump oil right on the starter. I know mine does
I just recently bought this truck from a Guy at a scrap yard the truck is in really good shape but of course has a few things to be fixed. I will certainly put the ground on. First I've gotta find this bolt. Guess ill get my old crippledup self at it Thank you for your time may God bless u faily
