Ok I have a 68 F100 3 speed manual 360 FE and a 323 rear end It seems to low in first and if I drive in second it revs to short to go very far, but 3ed lugs down in city traffic! Question should I try a 300 ratio or would I be better to go to a 373 for driving around town? The 300 might let me cruiz more in 1st and second but the 373 might make 3ed a joy to putt around in any input???
Do you do alot of highway driving? Are you concerned with mileage?
It's a no win situation with an ol 3 spd tranny. If you want some gear out back to make it easier to cruise around, then you end up wound up tighter on the highway.
Only when you put in some other tranny with more selection will you make it better with the rear gear you have now. I always HATED 3 spds because of this. I put 4 spds in my trucks to help with this. This is the car version-NOT the creeper truck version.
Only you can make the decision on what you want/need.
mostly city but gas is a cosideration now back up to $2.99 gal in Arlington Texas and I try to never go over 60 anyway. If I go to a 4 speed won't my driveshafe have to be shorten I have a 2 shaft now.
Your timing might need adjusting, I recall making short left hand turnes and going up hill at around 15 mph while remaining in high gear, with a 3 spd & 3.25 rears.
Doesn't matter if you put a 10 speed tranny in, unless you use an overdrive the outpute will be 1 to 1. Go to a 4 spd and you just have one more gear to change.
