I was just wondering how long of a battery life everyone is getting or has got with their truck. I had to put a new battery in my 97 F-150 with the 4.6 and auto tranny this past Friday. The truck is also a Lariat. The auto store guy told me that the battery in my truck was the original Motorcraft battery from the factory as it was sealed and you couldn't add water to it.
Eight years seems like a pretty good battery life in a truck like this. Has anyone else got this kind of use from their batteries?
The longest I have ever had a battery to last before was 7 years in an 87 Nissan truck with a 5 speed manual that had nothing on it except a radio that I installed.
A lot depends on 1) how hard the battery is used, 2) what battery it was originally (ie, 2 yr warranty, 3 yr, etc,) and 3) capacity. Averagy life is 3 to 5 years. Things that can kill it - electrical shorts causing repeated drain/recharge cycles, extreme temperature operation(hot or cold), alternator malfunction, hard to start vehicle requiring extra cranking at each start, poor maint of water levels, long idle periods, to name a few. I,m sure others can add to the list.
Still have the original battery in my '01 at 114,000 miles. I have a '63 Mercury with the battery (M/C) that my father put in it, and he's been desceased for 8 years. I don't know what keeps it going, but I'm just going to see what happens. Same with the engine, 260 V8, 149,000 miles, nothing done to it, except carbs and a timing chain. Rob
